When your only goal is to survive each day, you’ll When your only goal is to survive each day, you’ll live your life in survival mode.
I know because that was me.
Don’t get me wrong — there are certainly seasons where survival is all we can manage. But once the threat passes, we have to recalibrate and intentionally move differently or we’ll get stuck there.
You’d be surprised how much difference one seemingly insignificant shift in what you do daily can transform your life.
Let me challenge you today: what’s one small thing you can do today that’ll bring you joy?
(I’ll be making myself a homemade mocha latte here in just a minute — and the rule is I get to read while I’m drinking it before diving back into work. That sounds pretty joyful to me!☕️📖)

Countless cups on the night stand. A crooked lampshade (thanks to a cat who "loves lamp"). And everyone dog-piled on mom.
I have a beautiful office. I rarely use it these days. That used to bother me until I realized that a day will come where I'm sat in my quiet office working without interruption and I'll miss this.
This season of life is full. And challenging. And messy. But isn't that what life's supposed to be?
Some really hard and horrible things had to happen Some really hard and horrible things had to happen to bring me to this point.
Sometimes when you think you're being buried, you're actually being planted. Grow, baby. Grow!

Think about it!! (Then do about it!) 🦋💜 Think about it!! (Then do about it!) 🦋💜
DID YOU KNOW? I wrote the first draft of "Yeah, m DID YOU KNOW?
I wrote the first draft of "Yeah, maybe" just to see if I could write a whole book from start to finish? I went to school for creative writing, and while I wrote A LOT in college, I never wrote a story that was longer than 50 pages.
The first draft was full of storylines that *NEVER* saw the light of day.
I wrote it in an awkward period in my life. I was working at a tanning salon and living in my parents' attic. (Shout out to other 2008 graduates who entered the "real world" to a crap job market and housing crash.🥳) I was getting married soon, and I just wanted to try my hand at it.
It was never supposed to *be* anything.
But 2023 Joey (IYKYK) is so glad I wrote (and eventually published) the book that swooped in to save me and my little family many years later.
Do the thing because you want to. That's more than enough of a reason. 💗
The older I get, the more I hold fast to the fact The older I get, the more I hold fast to the fact that not everyone needs to know your business. So when last year started, and I was going through some pretty heavy things — I decided to lean into activities that didn’t include talking about it to death.
Apart from opening my bible for the first time in years, I decided to try my hand at creating my own sourdough starter from scratch.
I researched. Oh boy, was there so much research. I hemmed and hawed, wondering when would be the right time to start. And then one day, I just said “the hell with it” and poured flour and water in to a jar.
I didn’t have all of the equipment.
And I certainly didn’t really know what I was doing.
But it was something to do.
What did I have to lose?
As the days passed, I’d collect more data. What was working? What wasn’t? Do I need to put it up higher on a shelf to access the warmer air? Do I need more water? Less flour? Each day, I’d assess, test and change.
My starter is over a year old now. I’ve made countless loaves of bread and even more pizza doughs (seriously, you gotta come for pizza night — it’s so good). I still mess things up. There are times where I have to throw failed attempts away entirely. There are others where I do everything just the same as before and it comes out more perfect than ever.
Funny. I realize now this has nothing to do with sourdough…
